Mental health.
A man’s life is made up of his memories. If one can’t have a recollection of his or her life, what is the important of life? This is simply the scenario, people living with mental health issues feel and endure daily, living life under the shadows, with no or little recollection in memory, of what their lives is all about, who their crosses families’ relatives are? Just to mention.
In order to maintain memories, of who we are, what we do, or where we come from is what makes humans and is facilitated by having a good mental health status.
I believe, in life you know or have ever come across someone, suffering from a mental illness. What were your thought on mental disease, and how should they be addressed, to ease the pain and burden such patient tend to go through.
Despite, the advancement made in the health sector, to facilitate better and up standard health services, mental health issues are still rampant around the globe, yet its’ not getting the necessary attention it deserves, hence resulting in an increasing rate of suicide cases.
In order to win the fight against, mental illness, it’s crucial for all government agencies, health organization and corporations, stakeholders, the public and private partners, and N.G.Os involved get to come together, collaborate and work:
1. To create awareness about mental illness,
2. To pool resources together and work towards finding a suitable solution to this menace, encroaching our communities like a wild fire ready to consume.
By creating mental health awareness, we acknowledge mental health is important, by putting it out there so as the people who feel too much affected, can get the necessary help they deserve. Therefore it’s with certainty to say, mental health awareness means bringing down the walls of stigmatization, by sharing our experiences, stories and truths, without fear or shame. It means, educating others, on mental illness really is, and helping those suffering, by reassuring them they’re not alone in this fight.
Mental illness can be classified into various categories:
1. Anxiety disorder.
2. Personality disorder.
3. Mood disorder.
4. Psychotic disorder.
5. Trauma –related disorder.
6. Substance abuse disorder.
Having taken into perspective what mental illness is and the importance of creating this awareness, it’s important also to acknowledge suicide and suicidal thoughts is a mental disease that needs to be tackle and dealt with to. The rate to which mental illness is contributing to suicide across our communities and nation, results from either of the six classification mention.
For instance, trauma-related disorder such as post-traumatic stress disorder, experienced by majority of our war heroes, is a contributory factor, why there is an increase rate in suicide by our veterans and security agencies personnel. In other cases, substance abuse disorder can also result into committing suicide or the thought of it. Therefore it’s important that, if you or someone you know get suicidal, to immediately seek help. As suicidal thoughts are not to be taken lightly, or promised to be kept a secret.
Suicide is preventable. When we make suicide prevention a priority we can be empowered to take the correct action and save someone before engaging in a behavior with an irreversible consequences.
Mental illness is something real in our societies. And worse of it all, the same society has added more salt to it by being judgmental...Yes i know that feeling ..The very feeling that no one understands what you are going through.
Should i say we live in a society that is too judgmental? Our parents have also pinned us to the same beliefs, which birthed rejection and before you know it, grave becomes the only place the mind anticipates to find rest, hence the raising rate in suicide and suicidal thoughts.
Suicide does not necessarily mean that someone is tired of living. No one wishes to die early, in fact everyone hates dead. What happens here is beyond us, beyond everything. Beyond our control and the only thing that the hearts yearns for is the Peace of mind and soul.
The biggest question is, where do you find peace? When your family members, friends, co-workers have vowed not to see you enjoy a peaceful life...then slowly by slowly the idea of finding this peace elsewhere starts coming up .Suicide is just but a pursuit for peace.
Some people get emotionally distressed to the extent that they cannot think clearly hence end up making irrational decisions.
Most people that commit suicide don't actually want to die. It's just that they are filled up with feeling of hatred towards themselves, fear, isolation and hopelessness.
Let’s listen and reason with the people affected. That’s why our government and the constitution should be amended to change suicide from being a criminal offense but a mental health problem or mental health crises
The truth of this matter is....after someone has taken away his/her life, it's when people ask why? Ask now. I came to realize that 90 percent of cases are caused by social factors in families. Let’s talk about it now, matters mental health have been swept under the carpet, and left there.
There are so many stressors in this day and age; and people are suffering silently because of the social stigma associated with matters mental health. People also opt to suffer in silence because people to confide in are hard to come by; since, most people will tell others what they have been told in confidence!
By the time a person opts to commit suicide, they are extremely overwhelmed, and they feel they have run out of options. It is our responsibility to be each other's keepers. When we realize that someone seems disturbed, we should take it upon ourselves to support them, without blaming them.
Kindness cannot be overemphasized; let us be kind to one another you never really know what the next person is undergoing. An act of kindness would go a long way in cushioning their distress.
